Sangla Valley is located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh state of India. It is spread all along the Baspa River surrounded by snow covered Himalayan mountain ranges.
After staying for a week in Sarahan, we decided to discover more of Himachal Pradesh so we went to Sangla via the Hindustan Tibet road. I consider this road as one of the most dangerous road I encountered. As I recall it, it is very rough, very narrow with lots of blind curves and hair-raising steep road. All I can see is the river with strong current beneath us and some workers repairing the road. In fact, a landslide happened just in front of us. Luckily, a worker informed our bus driver to stop.
Here’s the video of our road-trip to Sangla Valley from Sarahan via the Hindustan-Tibet road.
As the river beneath the mountains changes its color from gray to crystal clear, We were suddenly greeted by wide and open valley with green trees and a the snow capped peaks of Kinner Kailash. That was our entry to the most beautiful and charming valley of Himachal Pradesh. Later on we entered the very scenic village of Sangla.
The natural scenery all around and the eternal snow view are picturesque and charming. It is also known as Baspa Valley since Baspa river flows through this area. According to many, this is the most charming valley in the entire District of Kinnaur.
Like the small villages that I visited around Himachal Pradesh, Sangla's old charms still remain. The natural beauty of the valley is absolutely breathtaking. Small towns nestled in the valley and all of them look so peaceful and serene. While I was in Sangla, I noticed that there are no modern facilities available, giving every visitor a chance to enjoy the original beauty of this small town while learning how the locals live in simplicity.
I noticed that the locals are very simple, polite, warm and very down to earth people. Making our stay more memorable.
We can’t turn our eyes off from the beautiful Baspa river and green trees surrounding the beautiful houses.
Agriculture is the main livelihood of the locals, mainly focus on apple plantations.
Sangla Valley is situated at a height of 2700 meters above sea level. The best time to visit is in the months between April and May and again September and October. Be sure of the weather when you are planning to visit Sangla Valley as the road to the Satluj River is closed for sometime during winter season where they usually experience 2-4 ??C.
Here are some tips in case you are planning to visit a place with a cold climate like Sangla Valley:
When preparing for a trip into a cold climate or even for a long trip, avoid over packing. Carrying extra luggage is always a hassle. When you are in a high altitude and the weather is frigid, having extra weight around is not good.
Be particular about fabrics. Look for fabrics that breathe and dirt resistant, for sure it will make your trip more enjoyable. A pair of thin thermal undergarments helps trap your body heat without adding too much bulk. Make sure to carry hand and foot warmers.
When in a cold place, your skin get easily dry so be sure to bring Face treatment oil, moisturizer, lip balm and sunscreen to prevent windburn. Cold weather does not mean the sun cannot damage your skin.
Pack a comfortable pair of shoes and a pair of water-resistant hiking boots.
Finally, if you are going to a cold climate and do not normally live in one, consider buying a winter coat at a thrift shop when you arrive, use it for the duration of your stay there and then you can give to someone you meet on the road.
