The Algarve is a fantastic all-rounder as a choice of destination. Love golf? You're well catered for. Great beaches? Check! Shopping? Lots of it. Nature? You're in luck.
Vilamoura is one of the Algarve's premier resorts for all of the above, with a little more thrown in for good measure. Add to that the cheap flights heading to Faro Airport, and I'm running out of reasons to convince you to go! Oh did I mention, you can head there in summer or winter?
I'd recommend making travel as easy and cheap as possible, which is always useful in these times of belt-tightening. I recently had an early flight and thought I'd try an airport hotel ' I'm a convert for life now, having found the whole experience fantastic and it also meant the travel element was an enjoyable part of my holiday. Most major airports offer this service, and if you're heading out of Heathrow, be sure to check out the wide range available, including the Sofitel and the Sheraton, both offering comfort, and prices that are easy on the wallet!
One of the major advantages to a holiday in Vilamoura is that the transfer from the airport is minimal, meaning more time in resort and less time sweating on a bus ' bonus! Getting around the resort is easy, with a good, reliable bus network, however I'd recommend hiring a car if possible, as the area around the resort is beautiful, with much countryside to explore up in the hills.
There are four top-class golf courses in Vilamoura, so if you're into golf, you're well catered for. However, I'd be heading to the beach, and Falesia beach is a popular spot, with good facilities available for a day's sun-baking and splashing. The marina is the main focus point, and is a perfect place for a spot of people-watching ' one of my favourite activities.
For an equally wet, but slightly less sandy day out for the kids, and big kids alike, head to Aqualand and enjoy a day's water-park fun.
When the moon makes an appearance, Vilamoura enjoys a vibrant, bright level of entertainment, from nightclubs and bars open until the small hours, to chilled-out cocktail bars and restaurants. If you fancy a flutter, there's also a casino where you can try your luck. The plus side is that nobody will go hungry either, thanks to the variation of restaurants around the resort, so you can find anything, from Chinese to fast food.
Vilamoura is a fantastic spot for a chill-out, with golf and beach-life the two main big-hitters. Low cost airlines make this destination accessible for all, and airport extras make it even more so. Remember the airport hotel idea, with facilities from all large airports, including Gatwick, where flight prices are often lower. There's a large range available here, including the Hilton at Gatwick??among others, so definitely check those out.
Kick back on the beach, relax on the golf course … the choice is yours.
