My Roomorama Experience in Kolkata, India

May 1, 2012 by Bino 3 Comments

While I was in Cambodia, I received an e-mail from Roomorama, a vacation rental site. They we're asking if I'm interested to experience their service in exchange of a review. I was intrigued by the service since I often heard them from fellow travel bloggers so I accepted the offer and waited for the perfect time to use it.

While in Phnom Penh, the plan is not yet clear on where to go next. China, India or just around Southeast Asia are the options. But when we got the six-month visa to India, we decided to stay in India for the whole period to maximize the airfare. As soon as the India leg began to materialize, I decided to take advantage of the Roomorama service in Kolkata, India to finally experience for myself what their service was all about.

Roomorama Process:

After browsing around the Roomorama website for a while, I noticed that it's very easy to navigate. I typed in 'Kolkata, India' on the search function and it provides the list of accommodations in Kolkata. Letting me sort the list based on price range and choose the best accommodation that suite my needs. You need to register in their site before you can make inquiry and booking.

Booking is just a simple three-step process:

  1. Inquire ' When you find a place that you want to stay at, make an Inquiry with the host through Roomorama to check if it is available.
  2. Confirmation of Room Availability ' The host will then reply to your inquiry via Roomorama website if the property is available or not. If available, you will then proceed to step number 3 and if not, you will then need to look for another property and contact the host.
  3. Book ' Once the host confirms the availability, you can book and pay for the property through the site. Upon payment, you'll be asked to electronically sign the booking to avoid fraud transaction on credit card. Once done, you'll receive a 6 digit payment code which you'll need to present to your host upon check-in.

As a piece of advice, it would be easy if you inquire about a few different properties days or weeks ahead of your trip. It will give you enough time to wait for the host to reply in Roomorama and to give you more option in case the other property is not available.

My Accommodation:

I stayed in a guesthouse strategically located near the backpackers' area in Kolkata, India and some of the main tourist attractions are just near my hostel.

The room is spacious and clean with its own bathroom (with hot & cold shower), Cable TV, desks, ceiling fan and AC. The only downside is the unavailability of internet connection (as of the time of writing). Actually, most accommodations in Kolkata (that I've checked) do not offer Wifi services, which is not good for people like me who works online.

Overall, I would recommend Roomorama. If you have any upcoming trips or travel plans, check out my Roomorama widget to start looking for a place to stay for your next vacation! They have a wide range of accommodation options that would suit anyone's budget. There are guesthouses that cater to budget travelers like me and there are also luxurious accommodations for those who wants to splurge. I will definitely use the service again if I want to have a short term rental during my stay here in India.

Editor's Note: Roomorama covered my accommodation costs while I was in Kolkata in exchange for a review. However, these are my own opinions about the experience.

I’m excited to hear more about your trips to India. I’ve been fascinated by this country lately. And nice accommodation you got there, just enough for a non-splurge trip.
