Without a doubt, Cambodia is famous for its heritage sites like Angkor Wat. But if you want to discover Cambodia beyond it, Sihanoukville would be one of the best beaches to visit for your 2012 holidays. It’s a province and a port city in Southern Cambodia, offering beach and marine attractions. Here, you’ll find many islands and white sand beaches with small hills. Something which is very different from the temple ruins in Siem Reap and from what you can see in cities such as Phnom Penh.
Here are some of the Islands and Beaches of Sihanoukville:
The northern end of Ochheutal beach is where Serendipity beach is located. While the first is popular among local tourists, Serendipity is popular among foreigner. It has plenty of restaurants serving western cuisine, bars, internet shops, clothing boutique and electronic shops. Serendipity is a busy beach by day, and at night it turns into a beach restaurant with scattered satellite chairs and sofas. It is considered as Sihanoukville’s shopping and leisure center.
This, along with Serendipity Beach, is by far the most popular and touristed beach in Sihanoukville. You’ll find numerous bars, dining options and hotels stretching along the mid-section of the 5 km. long beach. It is also the most central beach of Sihanoukville and the most popular among local tourist. Water sport activities like banana boat riding and jet skiing can be enjoyed here.
Sokha beach is a kilometer and a half long private beach. It is a stretch of fine white sand and crystal clear water. Among the beaches of Sihanoukville, Sokha beach is the well-maintained primarily because it is a private beach. The portion at the near end of the beach is still open to thepublic, there are a few hillside and Cliffside bungalows.
Otres Beach is a three kilometer crescent of white sand. This beach resembles Ochheuteal beach except that there’s no development at all except for a few thatched roof restaurants at one end. It offers a more leisurely and relaxed atmosphere and a great place to retreat from the weekend and holiday crowds at Ochheuteal.
Koh Russei (Bamboo Island)
The most beautiful beaches I’ve seen in Sihanoukville aren’t on the mainland, they are on the islands near the Sihanoukville coast. One of these is the Koh Russei or also known as Bamboo Island, one of closest and best of the islands. It is a small island with breathtakingly beautiful beaches on two sides, connected by a kilometer and a half long path cutting through the jungle covered interior of the island. There is a small bar on the windward side of the island offering bungalows for those want to stay for a night on the island. Getting to the island is an easy 45 minute boat trip.
With long white sand beaches and crystal clear water, Indeed, Sihanoukville is a great place to experience the different side of Cambodia.
