The Great Wall of China is a true wonder of the world and an absolute must-see in China. It snakes more than 6,700 kilometers along the whole northern frontier of the ancient Chinese empire. In 1987, the Great Wall was listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site and preservation work on significant portions of the wall continues today. The Badaling section of the great wall is the classic visiting spot. The Mutianyu and Simatai sections are also famous.
Great Wall of China
I was able to visit the Huanghuacheng section (Yellow flower City) of this great wall. This is a good place to go if you don’t want a super touristy, commercialized trip to see the Great Wall. Visiting the Great Wall of China in Beijing is very interesting, especially if you are a history buff, although anyone could enjoy this trip.
The stairs of the Great Wall can be rather steep and rocky with loose stones at times. But if you are not wearing high heels and you’re not planning to try any closed sections, I am sure most of you could make it. I don’t label people by their ages but you should know how long you can cover. The scenery is breath taking and the climb is exhilarating.
Be prepared for a fairly tough hike, this portion of the wall is in its original condition and simply magnificent in its raw beauty. There are no handrails at all and some portions involve a very steep ascent or descent. Watch your footing and grip. Dress for hiking and dress for the weather. Choose comfortable footwear with good grip and support for the feet. Wear/bring sun protection in the summer and dress for sub zero temperatures in the winter. Actually, common sportswear will do just fine.. Don’t forget to bring water and your camera!
This is where we had our late lunch
They call it one of the 7 Wonders of the World for a reason! It stretches on it seems forever and just imagining the labor and suffering that was endured to make this astounding and protective wall is amazing. The size, height and span is not truly realized until seen and experienced in person. One word of warning- just be careful when you climb it. There are some steeps parts of the wall that make going up and/or down very scary and dangerous. Other than that, it is one of the biggest highlights of my China trip!!
